Our Wine Story
Only the best suited wine is used in our Wijnfontein blends. The low yielding vineyards and meticulous winemaking ensure that a consistent high quality wine is being served from our Wijnfontein wine fountains throughout. The secret to our consistent and lasting quality is that uniquely our wine is served from a keg. This ensures a completely sealed off, airless system that keeps the wine as fresh as the day it was made.
With the KeyKeg system that is used, quality and safety go hand in hand throughout the entire supply chain, from the winemaking process, the filling of the kegs at the wine cellar to transporting, storing, dispensing and serving Wijnfintein to our customers.
Serving Suggestion
We love pouring Wijnfontein into a carafe and serving it in our contemporary stemless wine glasses. By initially pouring it into the carafe, we expose the wine to a little bit of extra oxygen, which allows the wine to ‘’breathe’’ a bit. This, in turn, helps to amplify the unique character and flavour of our wine. The stemless glass complements our South African culture as the wine can be enjoyed effortlessly – inside or outside. Wijnfontein Sustainability
As much as possible, the KeyKeg system takes into account the environment in which we and our customers live. Our lightweight KeyKegs are recyclable and all the raw materials can be separated in just a few steps to make new KeyKegs or to just simply be recycled. With the much reduced production and transportation carbon footprint cost when compared to traditional packaging methods such as bottles and regular ‘metal’ kegs, the KeyKeg seems to be the unchallenged way of the future. Behind the Wine
Mike Eksteen and brothers Danie and Philip van den Heever have been friends for over 25 years. ‘’We are wine lovers and restauranteurs. We strongly believe there is a market for a superior house wine that resonates with everyone, without breaking the bank. Whenever we visit a restaurant in Europe, the owner always proudly recommends his house wine and we want to bring this experience to our patrons throughout South Africa”.
The friends approached Wynand Grobler, a legend in the South African boutique wine industry, and together Wijnfontein was created. The foursome is on relentless journey around the Cape Winelands in search of the what would hopefully create the perfect Wijnfontein.
